he story of Charles’s life was filled with half-truths and enticing court gossip, enough to keep me interested. Roderick preferred not to be involved with rumors and scandals, whereas I secretly enjoyed them. Charles was the fifth son of Charles VI and Isabeau de Baviere. And, it was rumored, born out of wedlock. But no one dared bring up the subject for fear of their lives. Gossip about the king was seen as an act of treason.

After an arduous ride, we camped out for the night in a large field. I had brought Louie along, who wasted no time in preparing a meal of wine laced chicken over a strong fire. He was happy to be out and about after waiting for my return from the battlefield. I enjoyed the smell of garlic and fresh tomatoes wafting past my nostrils as I waited eagerly for yet another great meal. And I often marveled at his adaptability. Whether Louie cooked in the finest kitchen or in a field in the middle of nowhere, he always has managed to deliver a fine banquet.

“It smells delicious; I simply can’t wait!” Joan exclaimed as she moved closer to the pot bubbling on the fire. “Did you know garlic is good for the blood and the heart? My father told me we must eat it every day.”

I strained my eyes to see who it was, but could make out an unknown apparition in a long cloak heading straight toward us.

“Do you think it’s a messenger?” I asked Roderick.

“With urgent news for Joan?”

“Who are you?!” I demanded, with one hand raised in the air to stop him in his tracks. Whoever it was followed my order and stopped near to Joan, his face shrouded in shadow. The horse, sensing the heat of the fire, moved back, its flanks covered in sweat and foam from a long ride.

“What a wonderful aroma. Is there enough for a traveler in need of nourishment? I could also do with stopping here for the night if her lady of Orlèans has no objection, that is?” I recognized his voice at once, and it made my blood run cold.

Procrustes? How dare he show his face!

I had to do something. After all, I had more control of the situation than he did.

“Tell him to leave,” I said, whispering his name so she knew what she was up against. But Joan was not prepared to knuckle down to my request.

“I hear you are an immortal man who wanders the Earth with the curse of resentment towards mankind and women, in particular,” she said. “You are Procrustes, correct? What devilish thoughts must lurk in the recesses of your mind,
